Registrations
Registrations can be renewed in the office, by mail, placed in our drop-box, or online @itd.idaho.gov click “renew now.”
To register a vehicle purchased from an Idaho dealer, you will need to bring the Report of Sale and Application for Certificate of title provided by the dealer. If you are transferring plates from another vehicle, please bring the plate number you wish to transfer.
To register a vehicle purchased from a private party, please bring the title, any additional sale documents, and your Idaho driver’s license or out of state driver’s license and SSN. If it is an out of state title, a VIN inspection will be required. The title is $14 plus 6% sales tax on the purchase price. Registration fees are additional.
If you are moving to Idaho from another state, please bring yours out of state title, your Idaho driver’s license or out state driver’s license and SSN, and the vehicle for a VIN inspection. If a lienholder is holding the title, please bring your vehicle registration as well as the lienholder name, address, fax number, and your account number. VIN inspections can be obtained at any Idaho DMV office or by local law enforcement agencies.

Where is my Driver’s License
The Idaho Transportation Department is currently estimating about 30 days for your driver’s license or ID card to be delivered. If your new driver’s license or identification card has not arrived in the mail as expected, please wait a minimum of 35 days from the date of issue before inquiring about its status. If it has been over 35 days and you would like to check on its status, please go to itd.idaho.gov and click the driver’s license.
Change my Name on my Driver’s License
To change your name on your driver’s license or ID card, you will need to provide one of the following documents;
- Certified copy of a court-ordered name change document
- State-certified marriage certificate, or a certified divorce decree. If your divorce decree does not restore you to your maiden name, you will also need to bring in your certified birth certificate.
- We do not accept photocopies of any documents
I lost my Driver’s License
The cost for a duplicate driver's license will be $20.00.
The cost for a duplicate ID card will be $10.
Out of State Driver’s License or ID Card
To transfer an out of state driver’s license or ID card, you will need to provide the following;
- Current ID or driver’s license and your social security number ( if you were not issued an SSN you would need to provide a denial letter from the social security office)
- Proof of residence such as mortgage or rental documents, utility bills, medical bills, bank statements, or pay stubs. It must have your name, current address, and dated in the last 90 days. A utility bill must include the portion that shows your name and your mailing address. We will not accept just the portion with the service address.
- If you are not a United States citizen, you will need to bring all legal presence documents. If you are transferring a driver’s license and are a United States citizen, you will be required to take the written knowledge test. If you are not a United States citizen, you will be required to take the written knowledge and the driving test.
You will need to take your test between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday. You must be called to an examiner by 5:00 pm to take the test that day. If you no longer have your current ID or Driver’s license, you will need to bring all other required documents plus any photo identification and birth certificate, if available.
Pricing for transfers:
- $5 for each knowledge test.
- $35 for a four-year license
- $60 for an eight-year license
- $40 for a four year CDL
- $10 for a four year ID card
- $20 for an eight-year ID
First time Driver’s License without taking Driver’ Training
To obtain a first time Driver’s License, you will need to be at least 17 years old unless you have taken a driver’s training course. You will need to bring the following documents;
- Certified birth certificate
- Social security number
- Photo identification such as school ID, yearbook photo, passport or photo transcript from a school you’ve attended
- Proof of residence such as mortgage or rental documents, utility bills, medical bills, bank statements, or pay stubs. It must have your name current address and dated within the last 60 days.
- If you are 17, you will also be required to bring a Verification of Compliance from your school's administration office and a parent or legal guardian to sign a liability waiver.
Drivers Training Permit
To obtain a driver’s training permit, a parent with their current ID or a legal guardian with court-ordered guardianship documents must bring the drivers training student with them to the driver’s license office the following documents;The students certified birth certificate or legal presence documents
- A school ID or yearbook photo (if available)
- Social security number
- Verification of compliance from the student’s school administration office.
- The student must also know where they are going to be taking their driver’s training.
- Must bring eyeglass if they are used for reading.
- The fee for a driver’s training permit is @ $26.50.
Upon completion of the driver’s training, if the student is 17, they may take the written and road test when they are ready to obtain their driver’s license. If the student is under 17, they must drive for six months and accumulate 50 driving hours. Once six months have passed from the day the student completed driver training, they may take the written and road test.
An adult 21 or over, who can verify the student has driven 50 hours, must be present when the student takes their written test. There will be a $5 fee for the written test. Written tests are available between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm daily. If you haven’t been called to an examiner by 5:00 pm, you will not be allowed to test that day. You need to schedule an appointment for your road test with a certified skills tester.
First time Driver’s License without taking Driver’ Training
To obtain a first time Driver’s License, you will need to be at least 17 years old unless you have taken a driver’s training course. You will need to bring the following documents;
- Certified birth certificate
- Social security number
- Photo identification such as school ID, yearbook photo, passport or photo transcript from a school you’ve attended
- Proof of residence such as mortgage or rental documents, utility bills, medical bills, bank statements, or pay stubs. It must have your name current address and dated within the last 60 days.
- If you are 17, you will also be required to bring a Verification of Compliance from your school's administration office and a parent or legal guardian to sign a liability waiver.
You will be required to take a $3 written knowledge test. The written test is only offered Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. You must be called to an examiner by 5:00 to take the test that day. After you have passed the knowledge test, you have the option to purchase a $15 permit that will allow you to practice with another licensed driver. If you are ready to take your skills testers, you will pay the driver’s license examiner $6.50. You will need to make an appointment with a tester of your choosing from the list provided to you. They require a cash fee of up to $28.50. After your test, you will need to bring the results your tester gives you to the driver's license office to purchase your license.
CDL License
To obtain an Idaho CDL, you must first possess an Idaho Class D driver’s license. When applying for your CDL learners permit, you are required to bring proof of lawful presence in the U.S., such as a certified birth certificate or valid U.S. passport. If your name has changed since birth, you are also required to bring in documents such as a certified marriage license, divorce decree, or court-ordered name change to show how you got from your birth name to your current name.
You are required to pass all written tests for the class of commercial driver licenses. Next, you are required to purchase a CDL learners permit. After 14 days of holding that permit, you can take the required skills tests. After the Idaho Transportation Department has received your skills test results, return to a driver’s license office to purchase your CDL. If you are required to have a DOT medical card, you must bring that with you.
The fees are as follows;
- CDL instruction permit is $29
- Written and endorsement tests are $5 each
- Skills test fees are $10 paid to the driver’s license office and a fee up to $190 paid to the skills tester.
- Skills test fees are $10 paid to the driver’s license office and a fee up to $190 paid to the skills tester, although the average fee is currently $100-$125.
- A Four year CDL is $40.
Concealed Weapon Permits
Concealed weapon permit applications are available at the driver’s license office between the hours of 8 am to 5:45 pm. The initial application fee is $57.85. You will be required to provide proof of firearms training and your state-issued driver’s license or ID card at the time of application. A fingerprint card will be given to you to take to the Blaine County Sheriffs Department located 1650 Aviation Drive Hailey.
If you are applying for an enhanced concealed weapon permit, you will be required to present a state-approved training certificate. Upon your application approval, you will be notified by telephone or mail to return to our office for the issuance of your permit. You may renew your permit up to 3 months before the expiration date or three months after.
You will be required to complete a renewal application, and the fee for this is $37.85. Upon your renewal application approval, you will be notified by mail to return to our office for the issuance of your renewed permit
