On Sunday, December 11, 2022, at approximately 7:54 p.m., Blaine County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a single-vehicle semi rollover on U.S. Highway 26 near milepost 216, east of Carey, Idaho.
The crash investigation determined that a 2001 Peterbilt semi-truck with a cattle trailer, driven by a 30-year-old male from Cut Bank, MT, was traveling westbound on Hwy 26 when it left the roadway on the right shoulder while negotiating a left turn in the highway. The semi overturned and came to rest on its passenger side. The trailer was carrying forty-five head of cattle, seven were deceased at the scene of the crash.
The driver, who refused transport for non-life-threatening injuries, stated that another car was traveling eastbound on Hwy 26 in the southbound lane. The driver stated that he moved to the right side of the lane to avoid a head-on collision. There were no other vehicles found at the location and no witnesses to the crash.
The Peterbilt truck and trailer sustained significant damages and had to be towed from the scene. The driver was wearing a seatbelt.
