Press Release - Blaine County Sheriff K-9 Program

The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) is excited to announce our new K-9 Program. After extensive research by our team, Sheriff Steve Harkins supported and approved the development of two drug detection/tracking canine teams.

The mission of our new K-9 program is to support law enforcement efforts and enhance community relations in Blaine County, Idaho. Along with drug detection, the two teams are trained in human tracking, warrant searches, and evidence location. They will work alongside our patrol deputies and Narcotics Enforcement Team, and provide assistance to local law enforcement agencies and probation officers. The K-9’s will be a critical partner to the Blaine County Search and Rescue Team in helping find missing or lost people.

Aside from their law enforcement duties, the K-9 teams will be involved in community policing efforts by giving demonstrations of their canine’s abilities, providing drug education, and connecting with our community. “We want the dogs and their handlers to be visible and approachable,” said Sheriff Steve Harkins. We plan to incorporate the K9’s into our local schools, partnering with the Blaine County School District, to educate our youth about the dangers of drug use and to help keep our local schools drug free.

BCSO Corporal Phil Rummel and Deputy Chris Harrison were selected as our K-9 Handlers. These experienced deputies recently returned from the Alabama Canine Law Enforcement Training Center, where they spent five weeks selecting and training with the new canines. Corporal Rummel, pictured right, is partnered with “Eric”, a two year old male German Shepard/Malinois mix. Deputy Harrison, pictured left, is partnered with “Kimber”, a one and a half year old female German Shepard/Malinois mix. Becoming a K-9 Handler is a substantial ongoing deputy commitment which requires a tremendous amount of time and training to achieve and maintain Idaho State Canine Standards and Certification. The deputies will spend countless hours bonding and caring for their new partners for many years to come. “We thank both of our deputies and their new K-9 partners for their future service to our community and give them our full support” said Sheriff Harkins.

The initial cost of the program has been funded at no expense to the Blaine County tax payers. Startup funding was made possible by a grant from the Idaho Office of Drug Policy and drug forfeiture funds.

“We are proud to announce this new program and believe our K9 teams will be a useful tool in many aspects of our law enforcement operations and services. We see this program as a valuable investment in our community”, said Sheriff Steve Harkins.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Sheriff Steve Harkins
